Any sort of rifle that is selective-fire and uses detachable magazine and intermediate cartridge. This concept was first elaborated by the Germans during World War 2. So here I am presenting you the Top 10 Most famous Assault Rifles of All Times. The criteria I used in this post is, popularity and of course, availability.So, here we go!

10- Mosin-Nagant (M91/30):
The Mosin-Nagant was a bolt-action, internal magazine, military rifle developed by Imperial Russia with the collaboration of Belgium in 1891. This was a step taken to match Imperial Russia’s military strength with other European forces. This rifle was a result of experimentation for more than a decade from 1881-1892. Specs wise, it had a muzzle velocity of 2,838 ft/second and a fire rate of 12 rounds-per-minute. It was a 7.62 Caliber rifle.
9- FN SCAR:
SCAR is a modular rifle, manufactured by Belgian company FN Herstal (FNH) for United States Special Operation Command (SOCOM). It is a short gas-piston rifle. It supports up to 20 round magazine. It is extremely accurate and light handed rifle. Its muzzle velocity is 870 m/s and effective firing range is 800 m. Its fire rate is 650 rounds-per-minute.
8- H&K G3:
G3 is a battle rifle that is developed by German Armed manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H & K), together with Spanish manufacturer CETME(Centro de Estudios Técnicos de Materiales Especiales). It is an assault rifle of 7.62 mm Caliber. Its development was started during the last years of World War 2. Its rate of fire is 600 rounds per minute and Effective Firing range is 500 metre. Its muzzle velocity is 800 m/s.
7- M4 carbine:
This is a whole family of assault rifles, not just a single rifle. M4 rifle is derived from the earlier M16 rifle, which in turn is derived from the AR-15 rifle. It is a 5.56 mm NATO round gas-operated gun, with a telescoping stock.
It is mainly used by US forces and it has been used in many wars like Afghan war, Iraq war, 2006 Lebanon war and Gaza war etc. Its muzzle velocity is 800 m/s, effective firing range is 600 m and rate of fire is around 950 rounds-per-minute.
6- H&K 416:
HK 416 (Heckler & Koch) is an assault rifle, manufactured by German Company Heckler & Koch. it’s designed was heavily influenced from AR-15 rifle and was improvement to M4 carbine gun. It has various versions D10RS, D14.5RS, D16.5RS, D20RS, HK416C, MR223 etc
. Its muzzle velocity differs according to the barrel length of its different variants, it ranges from 788 m/s to 917 m/s. Its maximum firing range is 400 m where its rate of fire is 750-900 rounds-per-minute.
5- FN FAL (Fusil Automatique Léger):
FN FAL is selective-fire, semi-automatic battle rifle, designed by Belgian manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN). During the Cold war, it was used by all countries of western world except US. Due to its acceptability among western countries, it is nicknamed as “the right arm of the free world”.
As one of the most popular rifle in history, it is used by more than 90 countries. As far its specs goes, it has a fire rate of 700 rounds per minute. Its muzzle velocity is almost 840 metre per second and effective firing range of 700 metres.
FAMAS (French: Fusil d’Assaut de la Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne or “Assault rifle from the Saint-Étienne weapon factory”) is an assault rifle designed and manufactured in France by MAS, which is now a member of the French government-owned Nexter group. It is the service rifle of the French military. Its barrel is longer than the most of other rifles and its build-up made it pretty easy-to-use. It has different variants like FAMAS F1 and FAMAS G2 etc. Its muzzle velocity is almost 950 m/s and effective firing range is 450m. Its fire rate is 1100 rounds-per-min.
3- Steyr AUG:
AUG is an assault rifle of 5.56mm Caliber and manufactured by Steyr Mannlicher GmbH & Co KG (earlier known as Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in the 60s. During the late 70s, it became the official rifle of Austrian Army as StG (Sturmgewehr) 77. StG 77 was the successor of 7.2mm StG 58 automatic rifle. The AUG stands for “Armee-Universal-Gewehr”- universal Army rifle. Apart from Austrian Army, AUG and its variants are used in different national armed forces of other countries like Tunisia, Pakistan, Luxemburg, Ireland, Argentina and Australia etc. On technical aspects, Steyr Aug has a muzzle speed of 3,182 feet per second and has a firing rate of 650 rounds per minute. It has a maximum range of 2700 metres.
2- M16 Rifle:
After the Soviet AK-47, M16 Rifle is the most common rifle in this planet. It is used by persons of all fields related to arms. It is used by most Armies, Police, Law-enforcing Agencies and even Terrorists. Its design is tailor-made for semi and full automatic fire. M16 was first deployed in Jungle warfare operations in Vietnam in 1963, by US Army, then it became the standard rifle for US Army of Vietnam in 1969 by becoming the successor of M14 rifle. It is a 5.56 mm Caliber rifle. As of now, approx. 8 million M16 rifles have been produced (highest in its category). Its muzzle velocity is 3110 ft. /s and effective firing range of 800 metres.
Well, here is the most popular assault rifle ever, at our number one rank. Almost all of us have heard about it. Ak-47 is a gas-operated 7.62×39mm assault rifle. It was first designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov of USSR. In Soviet official documents, it is officially known as Avtomat Kalashnikova. Apart of this, it is also known as Kalashnikov, AK or Kalash in Russian slang. In 1947, it officially became the main weapon for Soviet Army and then it was gradually distributed to all Warsaw Pact countries. Even after 60 years of its inception, it is still a widely popular rifle, thanks to low-cost price, easy-to-use and reliability. Its stock version has 715 m/s velocity and effective firing range of 350 m. It has also cast its effect in popular cultures. Many other rifles are based on Ak-47’ design such as Galil by Israel, Type 56 by China etc.
